The lake was created in the mid 1930s with the construction of Parker Dam, along a section of the Colorado River. The city itself was founded in 1964, after its developer, Robert McCulloch, discovered the area while searching for a location to test his outboard engines. In 1963 he purchased a 26 mile square parcel of barren land, which would eventually become Lake Havasu City.
The community has grown considerably since it was labeled home of the Famous London Bridge, for the historic bridge that was moved to its shores in 1971. Today the population is approximately 50,000. Its residents are varied, including the winter residents who begin arriving around October and often leave before the summer visitors start arriving in the spring.
